If you are not a nail biter, then you probably find it difficult to even consider the puzzling question: Why do people bite their nails? However, if you do happen to have this irksome habit, then it’s important for you to know why you are doing it. By understanding why you bite your nails, you will be better equipped to stop the habit later on.
Biting your nails is an unhealthy habit because your fingernails are used for many things. They help you pick up tiny things and also are used for such things a scratching your skin and skin lesions. They also act as a collection receptacle for dirt and bacteria. When you bite your nails, you likely will take some of the bacteria into your mouth or release the germs into the openings in your skin which resulted from the bite. Infections often occur at the site where you bite your nails. And, the germs that collect under you nails have no place in your mouth! Just imagine…..all the bacteria you have accumulated under your nails in just one day. Knowing what you have under there would make your stomach curdle!
You probably don’t even realize that you are biting your nails when you do it. Most people do it while they are thinking about something else. They are unaware of it until they take a look at their bitten, jagged nails at some other time. Then, they are horrified to see what they have done to themselves. That is why it is so important to have a support system of friends or relatives available when you make the decision to quit. You need someone to continually reinforce and praise your efforts. You’ll also need tremendous willpower and a goal if you are to be successful in your efforts to quit.
Why do people bite their nails? Usually it is because they are going through a very stressful time in their lives. Or, it could be that they are simply bored and need something (anything) to do. Most people have an oral fixation of some kind that has probably resulted from a traumatic childhood experience. No matter what the cause, it is a habit that can be controlled and cured.
